Chanelle is originally from Ottawa,ON but 3 years ago her and her husband moved to Sylvan Lake AB where hey had their gorgeous little girl Nora who was a "wedding night baby". She is a small business owner of Noras Closet Baby Boutique where she sells the cutest baby accessories and outfits all made by her. She had a few early signs of pregnancy and around that 6-7 week mark Chanelle was quite sick right up until 20 weeks, she didn't get anything prescribed to help her nausea and decided just to ride it out. Right before Christmas Chanelle and her husband went to their 20 week ultrasound and had the tech put the gender written in an envelope to get a cake with babys gender colour inside. When they got together with their family is when they cut open the cake with their entire family to find out they were having a girl which Chanelle was so excited because she was hoping for a girl.
We hired a doula, which honestly I'd recommend to anybody to get a doula. She made the world of a difference.
Chanelle made her birth plan with her doula, ultimately her goal was no pain medications and going into it wanted to go all natural and sadly, Chanelles hospital didn't have the option for a water birth which is something which she would have loved. They did prenatal classes with their doula, prenatal yoga and her husband was able to go and learn some tips on how to work with Chanelle while in labour and to be an asset during labour.
Near the end of pregancy at 37 weeks her doctor wanted to have a scan just to confirm baby was head down where they had told Chanelle her amniotic fluid was low and sent her to the hospital to get induced which was not something she was hoping for. They got to the hospital ready to have their baby and the OB at hospital said the numbers were actually fine and ended up sending them home. At her follow up appointment her OB was confused as to why they had sent her to be induced but thankfully her levels were fine and she didn't need an induction. After a ton of confusion she went for another scan and it did end up confirming her levels were low and this time they schedule an induction.
At 8pm on a Tuesday they gave Chanelle her first round of cervadil that started up contractions right away was to be left in for 12 hours, the following morning at 8am to her surprise Chanelle hadn't dilated at all. They inserted another and waited the 12 hours, so 8pm on the Wednesday she had been contracting all day but when they checked she was still not dilating. Come Friday morning when her OB checked her she was so glad to hear she was 2-3 cm dilated, they decided to wait a couple hours and then got her all settled, did a check that put her at 5 cm then they started the pitocin.
"She did end up putting me on pitcoin and from there on it was like a blur basically."
One they started Chanelle on the pitocin things really started to speed up and intensify. Around 5pm she noticed things really picking up, she moved around the room a bit, her doula supported her with a rebozo and her husband did some counter pressure on her back since she was experiencing back labour the entire time - about 3 hours later Chanelle started feeling her body push and she pushed for 45 minutes in a squat position up until the OB came, 2 pushes after he came into the room Nora made her way out weighing 7 pounds, 6 ounces and they did delayed cord clamping which she says her doula really advocated for because the OB didn't really want to wait. Chanelle also did end up with a 2nd degree tear and 3 stitches but she didn't says it didn't really feel that bad so she didn't notice any major discomfort.
They ended up having issues with Nora latching to feed, hospital rules wouldn't allow for them to leave until they had a feeding plan so they stayed at hospital with her for 3 days. They left the hospital with the plan of exclusively pumping to bottle feed which Chanelle found very difficult so when the a public health nurse came to visit her, she gave them a nipple shield to try which really helped and after getting Noras tongue tie clipped they never had anymore issues and they had a successful breastfeeding journey right through to 18 months.
